Great family hotel
I traveled there with my son earlier this year, and we stayed 4 days at this hotel. the hotel is nice, quiet and family oriented with a friendly staff that watch the premises 24/7. there are two large swimming pools and one smaller wading pool for young children. there was also a large trampoline for the children.
we stayed in a large room on the second floor which included a small kitchen area and a nice size living room area complete with a set of couches and two arm chairs. the place is a bit hidden off the main road (but by just half a block) and is a block and a half to jaco beach. for me and my son, this was perfect for days at the beach and early evenings at the hotel pool. there is also a restaurant at the hotel which serves a decent breakfast until 10 am. but other food is close by, a subway, kfc and several smoothie places are within a two block area. and within 4 blocks, central jaco is easily accessed with pizzerias and grocery stores and souvenier shops.
for the price, this hotel is nice if you are looking for a family friendly, or quiet hotel with friendly staff and nice simple amenities, close to the beach and downtown.

A relaxing place for a family
We enjoyed our stay at Mar de Luz. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The kids enjoyed the pool and trampoline. We were able to relax poolside or on the balcony of our room. The grounds were attractive and well kept. We found the location of the hotel convenient for a day trip to Manuel Antonio and easy access to the airport in San Jose for a morning departure.

Great for the Price!
I stayed for 5 nights in February at Hotel Mar de Luz with my family. Our entire group consisted of 8 people including 2 young children. My room was great although there was not as much light as I would've liked. I was not in the dungeon rooms though. I was on the 2nd floor. My room had a king bed, a couch, and glasses, plates, refrigerator and microwave. The rooms were cleaned daily. I agree that the furniture was dated but I did not expect fancy furniture for the price. The pool area was by far my favorite. We traveled with 2 young children and we could all enjoy the large pool area. There are 2 pools up to 5 feet and a small baby pool in the middle. There were also lots of chairs to lounge on. However, the hotel does not offer pool towels so bring your own. The common areas also have a trampoline (which the kids enjoyed), a gazebo/lounge area with books provided, and the dining area. I received a free breakfast with the room rate and it was excellent and plentiful. Eggs, bacon, breads, fresh fruit and juices and coffee. The staff at the hotel was unbelievably helpful. They arranged to have a breakfast of fruit made available to us since we had an early flight out of CR and made sure that coffee was brewed for us. These simple gestures made me thankful that we booked this hotel for our trip. The hotel also offered 2 computers at the front desk for internet access. This was a great added bonus. I will probably never go back to Jaco because I did not like the beaches, however, I would recommend Mar de Luz if you are visiting Jaco.
